Other Telephone Survey Methods

Two other telephone interview survey methods have recently gained in popularity. One method has respondents push the buttons on their telephone to indicate answers to prerecorded questions. The fast turnaround time of this method allowed CBS News to broadcast the results of a national opinion poll within 24 hours after President Clinton gave his 1995 State of the Union speech. This procedure also has the advantage of saving money by eliminating the costs of interviewers.

The other telephone method has people (e.g., television viewers) call into numbers to register their opinions or vote about a given topic. Care needs to be used in generalizing the results from the nonscientific samples that respond to call-in telephone surveys. At this time, we are unaware of any organizational applications of this method.
